The call came at about 7:15 this morning, as I was on the way to church with a truck full of people. The person on the other end of the call was Brenda, a missionary to Haiti who also has a work in Benin, Africa, where she now spends most of her time. Brenda had arrived in Haiti a few days ago to spend about a month here to check on her mission and to have groups come in.

She told me that at about 1:00 AM on Sunday morning, six thieves came to her mission where she has a school, a church, and an apartment. Brenda and the others called the police and were told by the police that they couldn’t come because they had no gas for their vehicles. And they did not come.

The thieves were free to take their time and it took about two hours for them to get into the house by banging a large house through the cement block wall so that they could enter. The thieves were able take their time once inside the house/mission and made off with a considerable amount of equipment.

She was calling to tell me the news and to tell me that she wouldn’t be coming to church because she had to get some masons to come and fix the hole because often in Haiti thieves will continue to return until measures are taken to shore up security. She also has a group coming in tomorrow and is uncertain where to put the group.

Please pray as you can imagine what it must have been like for those inside the house as they waited for the thieves to break in. It can be so easy to get discouraged as you look around at what was stolen and when you call the police but they can’t or won’t come.
