Matthew 5: 14-16

14-You are the light of the world.  A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.
15-Nor do men light a lamp, and put it under the peck-measure, but on the lamp-stand; and it gives light to all who are in the house.
16-Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.

The inside of our house is dark.  The wood ceiling has dark stain on it.  The paint on the walls is dark; and there are many trees in the yard so there is not a lot of sunlight that comes in.

I like living in a dark house except that sometimes it is too dark especially when some of the lights stop working.  Because we spend much of the day running off of batteries, we use energy efficient compact fluorescent lights.  These are great in helping us draw less power from the batteries but the ones that we buy here in Haiti seem rather fragile and the irregularity in the electricity causes some of the bulbs to burn out rather quickly.

So we will take bulbs that work and put them in places where the bulbs have been burnt out.  This works well, except when you want to be in the rooms at night where there are no longer any light bulb because they has been removed and now are shining in other rooms.  Things work better when each light, in its place, is working and illuminating the area that it has been assigned to.

It has occurred to me that we being lights of Christ are to shine where we are and if we do not, it keeps people from seeing the light.  When we allow struggles or personal issues to dim our lights, then the impact is felt my many.  We  in Matthew 5:16  read: Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven. Being a light is not about us or even for us.  It is for others, to enable them to see clearly.

Wherever you may be, let your light shine.  This is especially important if where God has placed you is a dark area and you may be one of the few lights in that place.  Don’t just see where God has placed you as what it is now, but see what it could become if you were no longer there or even better what it could be if you really shone brightly.  Is your light shining?  Are you making a difference?  Do others see God in your good works?

A recent speaker at our church shared the quote below.  Think about it!

This quote is from the book "When Heaven Invades Earth" by Bill Johnson p110
"Part of our problem is this: we are accustomed only to doing
things for God that are not impossible.  If God doesn’t show up and
help us, we can still succeed."
