SERVE

Posted: April 6, 2011 in Uncategorized

It was a casual conversation.  I had arrived early to meet with the guys who would be going on our motorcycle ride and sat talking with a casual friend who was going on the ride.  He is a teacher at the international Christian school and will be leaving Haiti after this school year.  He and his wife are expecting their first child and will be going back to the States for a year or two.

He then said that they will perhaps be going to Peru where they will serve. It was one of those few minutes conversations and then we got looking at and talking about our motorcycles.  But the conversation stuck in my head, especially one word: Serve.

I for the past few days been thinking about my brief conversation with this man and about his choice of one word “serve.” He could have said, “I would like to go to Peru to teach,” or “We will be going there to work.”  But he chose to use the word “serve.” And I’ve been thinking about it for the past several days.

We are instructed to serve God. Joshua 24:14

Now fear the LORD and serve him with all faithfulness.

Joshua 22:5

But be very careful to keep the commandment and the law that Moses the servant of the LORD gave you: to love the LORD your God, to walk in obedience to him, to keep his commands, to hold fast to him and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul.”

Jesus said in Matthew 20: 26-28

Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, 27 and whoever wants to be first must be your slave— 28 just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

Jesus talking to the disciples at the last supper tells them in Luke 22:27

27 For who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who is at the table? But I am among you as one who serves.

And so then are you serving?  Are you making a difference in the lives of others by serving?  Where are you serving?  Are you serving God by serving others?

Jesus came to serve. We are to do the same for sure. I always picture Him, the Son of the Most High King…WASHING the feet of the disciples. Talk about serving. Beautiful, humbling picture.
