I have never once feared the devil, but I tremble every time I enter the pulpit.
It is no small thing to stand before others and represent the eternal, infinite, almighty God. I love this quote said by John Knox, the Scottish reformer, but I’m thinking that it could be expanded to encompass ALL that we do in representing the eternal, almighty, infinite God.
It doesn’t matter if you are a big time teacher at conferences or a Sunday School teacher to a bunch of five year olds.
It doesn’t matter if you are speaking in front of hundreds or at a home group of half a dozen people.
It doesn’t matter if you sing before thousands or lead worship in a church of fifty.
It doesn’t matter if you are at a church in a major city or in a hut church in a remote village in a far away nation.
It doesn’t matter if you are teaching a group of young professionals or standing before a room full of elderly folks at an assisted living facility.
May we always be in awe that the almighty, infinite, eternal God would choose us to be His hands here on earth. May we never lose the amazement and wonder that God would use us. May we never become so used to God’s love, mercy, and grace that we are not WOWED by it all.
Before we enter the pulpit, or stand before the crowds, or teach the class or lead worship, or look to God for His will for our lives, may we find wisdom in the words of David,
Oh come, let us worship and bow down;
let us kneel before the LORD, our Maker!
Psalm 95:6
